Cerebral Palsy

A group of motor disorders characterized by muscular incoordination and loss of motor function. It’s a non progressive disorder affecting movement and posture caused by damage to immature brain before, during or after birth.
It is characterized with exaggerated reflexes, floppiness/spasticity of the limbs and trunk. The individual may present with involuntary movements, unsteady gait, swallowing difficulties, difficulty attaining developmental stages, learning difficulties, seizures, and reduced joint range of motion etc.

Down syndrome

A genetic disorder as a result of abnormal cell division resulting into extra full or partial copy of chromosome 21 causing intellectual and developmental delays. The extra chromosome changes body and brain development causing both physical (flattened face, almond-shaped eyes, tongue sticks out of mouth, short neck, small ears, hands and feet, loose joints and shorter-than-average height) and mental challenges.
These individuals take long to reach goals, need extra support due to slowly achieved adaptive skills and have challenging behaviors. They could also have other complications encompassing heart defects, GIT defects, immune disorders, sleep apnea, spinal problems, obesity leukemia etc.

Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder

Is a condition characterized by persistent patterns of inattention (failure to give closure attention to details), hyperactivity (inability to settle in one place) and impulsivity (acting without thinking); that significantly affects the function or development of the individual. Its more frequent in boys than girls.

Intellectual Disability

Is a condition characterized with having an IQ measured below 70-75 and significant delays in areas of adaptive skills. Individuals with intellectual disability have difficulty learning and carrying out everyday life activities and social interaction.

Hydrocephalus

A condition where there is abnormal build up of cerebrospinal fluid in the brain ventricles causing excess pressure build up leading to impairment in brain function thus causing neurological and motor deficits. Hydrocephalus is characterized by unusual increase in head circumference, sun setting eyes, poor muscle tone, and memory loss, delays in skills acquisition, irritability, and headache.

Muscular dystrophy

A group of genetic disorder that cause progressive muscle weakness and loss of mass. It is characterized with progressive muscle weakness, enlarged cuff muscles, difficulty walking, heart problems, muscle pain, joint stiffness, scoliosis etc.

Dysgraphia

A neurological disorder and learning disability characterized by impairments in written expression affecting the ability to write and coherence. It is a specific learning disability as well as a transcription disability, meaning it’s a writing disorder associated with impaired handwriting, orthographic coding and finger sequencing (difficulty coordinating fine motor movements)
